Signs of a Blocked Downpipe

A blocked downpipe causes damp and water damage fast. Here's what to look for, and what to do about it.

Water spilling over the gutter in one spot

If water overflows from one particular section during rain rather than the whole run, that's usually a sign the downpipe it feeds into is blocked, not the gutter itself.

Damp patches or staining on outside walls

A downpipe that isn't carrying water away properly will often leak at the joints, leaving damp patches or dark staining running down the brickwork below it.

Gurgling sounds during heavy rain

A gurgling or bubbling sound from the downpipe during rain usually means water is backing up against a blockage rather than flowing straight through.

Water pooling at the base of the downpipe

If water is pooling on the ground where the downpipe meets it, rather than draining away, that's often a sign of a blockage further up.

Plants or moss growing from the pipe or gutter

Visible growth is a sign that debris has been sitting long enough to take root — usually a sign it's overdue for a clear-out.

What to do about it

Don't ignore it — a blocked downpipe left too long can lead to damp and water damage that costs far more to put right than a clean would. See our downpipe unblocking page for what the clearing process involves and what it costs, or call for a straight quote and we'll tell you what's actually needed.
